St. Mary’s would like to share with members of the congregation some information about a new program being offered by BlueDoor. Blue Door oversees the Out of the Cold Program, and are the largest emergency housing provider in York Region. As part of their efforts to help people transition to better homes and lives, the Blue Door has launched a job training initiative entitled Construct. This program pairs trainees with skilled contractors, who will teach the trade to their apprentices. People interested in helping support this program are invited to read further, or click the logo below to access the program’s website. The program offers reduced rates to as the new trades people learn their skill, but participants benefit as the whole job is supervised by skilled expert trade persons. Last month, Blue Door’s social enterprise Construct, launched an online training platform known as The Portal! The Portal has been created as a resource to continuously provide participants with access to skills training along with wraparound supports throughout the program and post-graduation.
To add even more value to trainees and graduates, trade employers looking to hire for their organizations will also be able to post job opportunities directly through The Portal. Job postings will range from apprentice positions, full-time jobs, apprenticeship programs, pre-apprentice training, grants for further education, and trades-related hiring events occurring in the Greater Toronto Area.

The portal gives trainees and graduates an opportunity to build on the skills and training they received from the LiUNA Local 506 Training Centre and Humber Centre for Trades & Technology with modules that focus on:
- Employability skills
- Mental health supports
- Future planning
- Construction math resources
- Job opportunities from employer partners

Construct currently has 37 trainees and graduates registered in The Portal, with the goal of eventually registering all graduates.
The Portal website has been created in partnership with WOW Digital, thanks to the generous support of Cisco and funding from the Government of Canada’s Future Skills Centre.
